McClaughry Biography Page II

Matthew McClaughry (3.1)
Born: c.1735 in: Cleghill townland, Parish of Clongesh, Barony of Longford, County Longford, Ireland
Died: 5 March 1789 in: Salem, Washington Co., NY
Parents: Thomas (2.4) and Margaret McClaughry
Wife: Ann Morrison
Born: c.1747 in Londonderry, NH
Died: 1790 in Salem, Washington Co., NY
Parents: John and Janet (Steele) Morrison

Matthew, Thomas' eldest son, grew up in County Longford during a harsh time in Ireland's history. Famine had become commonplace as English rule plundered the nation. The McClaughry family left Ireland when Matthew was about thirty (see Thomas(2.4) bio). As the eldest son, it was Matthew's duty to assist his father in the family's finacial affairs. While the rest of the family spent their first winter in America with son-in-law Edward Riggs in Esopus, NY, Thomas and Matthew traveled to Littlebritain to stay with Matthew Riggs, a surviving member of the Clinton Colony (see Matthew's(1.1) bio), in order to secure a place for the family to live. In the spring of 1766, Thomas and Matthew returned to Espous in sleighs to escort the rest of the family to Littlebritain where they lived on a farm owned by John Reid. In 1768 Matthew and his father's family purchased their own land along the Battenkill river near Salem, NY.
In this time, the yoke of English rule had grown heavy on the colonies and the lash of unjust taxation stung daily. When war finally broke out, Matthew readily joined the Colonial army. Matthew served as a private in Col. Alexander Webster's regiment, Capt. Edward Long's company. I am currently trying to track the Webster's campaign and hopefully, Matthew's term in it. If you have anything concerning this, please email me.
After coming home from the war, Matthew chose not to follow his brothers to Kortright and resided in Salem, NY until his death in 1789.
