Friends of Tombstone
November 2003

The Friends of Tombstone is a loose group of Old West researchers and afficionadoes who have gathered in Tombstone each November. Largely based through BJ's Tombstone History Discussion Forum, the diverse group participated in a multitude of activities such as, field trips to Fort Huachuca museum, Slaughter Ranch, and Guadalupe Canyon. Each night we enjoyed the hospitality of the Bella Union where various speakers shared new findings. And of course the town itself welcomed us with open arms and cash registers as we enjoyed the many shops, restuarants, and saloons. Although each have differing reasons for coming to the event, all enjoy the camaraderie of people with like interests and the sharing of information. FoT has been the perfect occasion to meet the most dedicated of todays researchers and make new friends.

Picnic at Slaughter Ranch Taking a break
One of the many highlights from FoT 2003, a picnic at the Slaughter Ranch. Taking a break in the Guadalupe Canyon

A special present from cousin Grubber. Commemorating the event when some stolen government mules just happened to wander on McLaury's Babocomari ranch and, quite by accident, had there brands of "US" altered to "D8". Grubber's D8 Mule Ranch t-shirt was a big hit at FoT 2003 Of course, I had to shamelessly plug my website with my original "Murdered on the Streets of Tombstone" t-shirt, originally created for FoT 2001.

Grubbermania say cheese
Although McLaury relative John "Grubber" Culligan was unable to attend this year, his presence influenced the entire event. One notable contribution in 2003 was his donation of replica firearms to the Wyatt Earp Birthplace to replace ones that had been stolen.
More significantly, John singlehandedly funded and helped set up the first Friends of Tombstone/McLaury Scholarship to be presented to a deserving student of Tombstone High School. Considering the McLaury Clan is noted for the many teachers it has raised, the 2003 recipient, Rebecca Kinsman, was well chosen. She used the $500 grant to help defray costs of tuition at Cochise College. Her goal is to obtain her associates degree, then transfer to Northern Arizona University to pursue a degree in Education. The best of luck to Rebecca. And special thanks go to Grubber!

Grubber Envy Still a Huckleberry by RollerDoc
The things I do for relatives. Here I am, er, proudly displaying my limited edition "60 and Still Sexy" Grubber t-shirt. It's a shirt only a cousin could love. After a long day hiking through Guadalupe Canyon, the weary travellers were welcome back to Tombstone with a tailgate party sponsored by author RollerDoc, who is preparing to release his new book, "Still a Huckleberry."
